Equator Research Schools improve access and participation of Black, Asian and minority ethnic students in environmental research.
Equator Research Schools aim to increase visibility of role models, build networks, improve access to training, boost application success, and foster a sense of belonging in postgraduate environmental research.
These fully funded, 5-day residential schools are exclusively for students from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic backgrounds interested in environmental research careers.
Since 2022, over 60 students have participated, supported by expert speakers and mentors. The first school was held at Sheffield Hallam University in 2022, followed by the University of Birmingham in 2023.
Qualitative evaluation shows a clear shift in participants’ attitudes toward research careers, with improved awareness, stronger networks, greater confidence, and a deeper sense of belonging. The findings highlight the impact of targeted, discipline-specific training in creating inclusive pathways into research.
