The transition from undergraduate study to postgraduate research is a point in the academic pipeline where a disproportionate number of students from ethnic minority backgrounds are lost due to structural barriers and bias.

This retention gap is particularly concerning for subjects with poor ethnic minority representation at undergraduate level, such as Physical Geography, Earth Science and Environmental Sciences.

Equator is a collaboration between professional bodies, grassroots organisations, academic institutions and the public sector to remove barriers, improve access and participation, and increase retention of students from ethnic minority backgrounds in postgraduate environmental research.
