Mentoring Networks

Equator mentoring networks aim to improve experience and increase retention of Black, Asian and minority ethnic students in environmental research.

Equator Mentoring Networks increase sense of belonging, confidence, and likelihood of continuing into postgraduate research.

Our ring-fenced networks facilitate mentoring for Black, Asian and minority ethnic students interested in environmental research, pairing each mentee with one academic mentor and one mentor from a non-academic profession. All participants are remunerated for their time.

Since 2022, Equator Mentoring Networks have provided support and networking to 50 mentees from Geography, Earth Science and Environmental Science subject areas, working with mentors from a range of organisations.

Evaluation has demonstrated that Equator Mentoring Networks lead to increased sense of belonging and inclusion, increased likelihood of retention into research, and the development of a body of experienced mentors to support future students.

Mentees have cited feelings of empowerment and improved confidence in continuing into postgraduate research following participation. Mentors report improvements in their skills development and increased likelihood of continued involvement in ring-fenced mentoring schemes in the future.
